Giving a Young Child a Voice Through Communication Technology

The JTYAF is delighted to have supported a five-year-old child who is preverbal and has an autism diagnosis by funding an iPad with the Proloquo2Go communication app installed.

After taking part in a Speech and Language Therapy trial using loaned equipment, the impact was immediate. For the first time, this young child was able to express thoughts, needs and feelings more independently, opening up a new way to communicate with those around them.

Sadly, the trial equipment could only be used for a short time and had to be returned to the Speech and Language service. Thanks to funding from John’s Foundation, our little award winner now has permanent access to a communication system that has already proved to be life-changing.

We are so pleased to have been able to provide this important communication ‘voice’ at such an early stage. This support has the potential to make a lasting difference, helping to build confidence, independence and brighter future outcomes.
