Ferndown Upper School Sixth Formers Raise Over £10,000 in Cardboard Campout Challenge

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) is delighted to announce the outstanding success of the Cardboard Campout Challenge 2025, hosted by Ferndown Upper School Sixth Formers. Their inspiring efforts saw a phenomenal £10,095 raised, a testament to these outstanding young people and their commitment and support of the JTYAF.

This unique fundraising event challenged students to construct innovative shelters using only cardboard and tape and then camp out in their constructions overnight. It was a true test of creativity, resilience and teamwork. An amazing 93 students rose to the challenge, and during the evening an incredible cardboard city came together, featuring imaginative designs such as drawbridges, fireplaces, boot stores, a steam engine, fairy lights, and even a sofa. The creativity shown in the shelter designs saw no boundaries and although in competition, the teams supported one another throughout the evening.  The atmosphere was wonderful, with everyone taking part enthusiastically. The FUS Sixth Formers were an absolute credit to the school.

The Cardboard Campout was only made possible by the tireless dedication of Ferndown Upper School staff, the students and the fabulous student Charity Team. The local community also played a vital role, generously donating materials and refreshments, including cardboard, gaffa tape, breakfast treats and pizzas, all of which contributed to the event’s success. Thanks must go to Custom Creations, Superior Seals, Hunt Group, Trek Bike Shop, John Pipe, Sainsbury’s Ferndown, Lidl West Parley, Tesco Ferndown, Asda Bournemouth and Dominos, for their fantastic support.

The impressive total of £10,095 raised will significantly enhance opportunities for young people in the area. The students received extremely generous support from their friends and family, and our sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed towards this incredible total.  The funds will provide bursaries and scholarships, supporting individuals from a variety of organisations, including Ferndown Upper School. These grants will, for example, nurture talented athletes, encourage creative pursuits, enable access to educational courses, and support participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and other life-changing experiences. Earlier this year a bursary enabled a Ferndown student to represent Dorset, as one of 32 athletes selected for the National Schools’ Championships in Birmingham.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved in the Cardboard Campout Challenge, many more young people will have access to opportunities to enable them to reach their full potential. The JTYAF extends its thanks to all contributors, especially the students and staff at Ferndown Upper School, for helping the Foundation continue its mission—making a lasting difference, one young achiever at a time.
