Ultimate Land’s End to John O’Groats Solo Endurance Cycle for the JTYAF
/We are delighted to share some incredible news about Dan and his upcoming adventure, which is bound to be both challenging and inspirational! Dan will be taking on the ultimate '40 for JT' Charity Challenge in support of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF). This isn't just any cycle ride; Dan's journey is the renowned LEJOG (Land’s End to John O’Groats) End to End Cycle, but with a twist.
Typically, this route covers around 950 miles and involves climbing over 38,000 feet, usually taking between 10-14 days to complete. However, Dan's route stretches the total distance to a whopping 1040 miles, with an elevation gain of over 40,000 feet. He'll pass through 40 counties, towns, and city municipal areas, with a special detour to Norton Manor Camp near Taunton, the home of John Thornton’s unit, 40 Commando Royal Marines.
Kicking off on Sunday, September 7th, Dan will start from Lands’ End and aims to finish in just 6 days at John O'Groats in Scotland. As a precursor to this main event, Dan will ride 100 miles from Ferndown Upper School, where John was a pupil, to the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in Lympstone, Devon, where John completed his Royal Marines officer training. This pre-ride is set for Thursday, September 4th.

We are incredibly grateful to Customs Creations and Hudsons for generously sponsoring Dan’s challenge. Their support has enabled Dan to obtain two sets of cycling tops and shorts, along with a windproof jacket, ensuring he's well-equipped for this monumental journey.
The JTYAF holds special significance for Dan. Despite a decade separating them, both Dan and John grew up in Ferndown, attended the same schools, and were cadets in the Air Training Corps. These shared experiences shaped their careers and instilled in them strong values. Dan aims to honour this connection while raising funds for a cause close to his heart. Supporting young people locally and helping them seize opportunities continues to inspire and drive each generation.
This famous route between the two farthest points on the UK mainland, from southwest England to northeast Scotland, is a popular choice for cyclists and walkers. First completed on a bicycle in 1882, around 4000 cyclists now attempt it annually, typically finishing in 10-14 days. Notably, James Cracknell, a former Team GB Olympic rower, and Lewis Moody, the former England Rugby Union team captain, completed the route in just under 9 days. Dan aims to complete the ride in 6 days!
Dan's remarkable journey aims to inspire young people everywhere to pursue their passions and seize every opportunity that comes their way. We wish him the best of luck on this incredible adventure!
