Megan Bird – A Grim Survivor!
Award Winner and Fundraiser

Megan Bird a student at Ferndown Upper School was awarded a scholarship in 2011 to attend an intensive 2 week Spanish Language Course in Salamanca. Megan was placed with a host family while she was studying in Salamanca and although she found the experience a little daunting at first she soon realised that as a result of being totally immersed in the language she was making huge progress with her Spanish.

Megan thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity she was given, her confidence improved and she made friends with young people from all over the world. She was the only English student in the school which presented quite a challenge with the constant demands on her Spanish but a real chance to develop her knowledge.

Extracts from Megan’s letter to the JTYAF.

‘I would like to thank you for giving me the grant to go to Spain and do my language course.....the family that I was placed with were lovely and the mother treated me just like I was her own daughter.

I was a little apprehensive at the start as I was literally engulfed but a couple of days in I realised how much more I was learning this way........I made many friends from all over the world.............

Salamanca is such a beautiful historic place and is known as the ‘estudiante de la ciudad’ which translates as the student city. I am thinking of returning next summer for a longer duration of time and I’m also thinking of even going to university there! I really cannot thank you enough. I really did have the most amazing time!!’

Megan pictured (far left) in Plaza Mayor with fellow students

Megan was determined to give something back to the Foundation so that she could help other local young people to achieve their ambitions. Megan kindly volunteered to model for the JTYAF at the Sainsbury’s Fashion Show in November, strutting her stuff on the catwalk in a whole range of outfits. We were very grateful to her for giving up her time to support us.

Megan Bird in Grim ChallengeMegan didn’t leave it there however and The Grim Challenge was the next event on her calendar. Megan and her Aunty, Isobel Hayward who went to school with John, decided this would be an appropriate challenge for them to take part in and raise funds for the JTYAF.

GRIM is an 8 mile off-road challenge run on the Army’s vehicle testing track in Aldershot. The competitors run on a mixed terrain– trails, rocky paths, sand, mud, and hills and through some rather large puddles – they get wet and very muddy! Megan achieved a fantastic time of 1hour and 20 minutes and both Megan and Isobel came in around 800th out of a field of 3000! We have huge admiration for these two very special young ladies for taking on such a muddy challenge and achieving such a great result. They also raised a superb £145 for the JTYAF. A big thank you to both Megan and Isobel from all at the JTYAF.

Tom Burn PhotographyDecember 2011

First JTYAF Calendar produced by Tom Burn

The Foundation was this year proud to present the first JTYAF Calendar for 2012, kindly produced by Tom Burn Photography.

JTYAF Calendar

Tom was a good friend of Johns; they were both pupils at Ferndown Upper School and often ran cross country together. Tom is a professional commercial and wildlife photographer and he approached the foundation offering his services to raise funds. Tom spent an enormous amount of time on this project, not only taking photographs but negotiating with printers, selecting his pictures, putting the whole calendar together and promoting sales amongst local businesses. The result is however a calendar of distinction, a superb collection of images, which has proved a huge success. Tom should be truly proud of his achievement.

The calendar is now unfortunately sold out but if you would like to be added to the list for a 2013 edition please contact us at enquiries@jtyaf.org and we will let you have full details as soon as they are available.

Tom’s calendar has made an extremely important contribution to the Foundation raising almost £600 and promoting the charity in many businesses and the local community. We are very grateful to Tom for his commitment to the JTYAF and would like to convey our thanks to him on behalf of all the trustees.

If you would like to find out more about Tom Burn Photography please visit Tom’s website at http://tomburnphotography.net

Fashion Show at Sainsbury´s Ferndown

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) is honoured to have been selected by customers and colleagues as the local charity of the year for 2011/12 by the Sainsbury’s store in Ferndown.

This is the second time that the store has chosen the JTYAF for their charity of the year and the store held a fashion show on Monday 14th November to raise valuable funds.

Samba Panashe opened the show with their infectious Brazilian beat and then the guests were treated to a dazzling display of Sainsbury’s fashion. JTYAF Award winners and Sainsbury’s colleagues and their families strutted their stuff on the catwalk modelling everything from pyjamas to evening wear. The evening was great fun for all concerned and raised an amazing total of £800 for the JTYAF.

The fundraising was boosted by a superb raffle with prizes donated by JP Morgan, Perkins and Snowtrax to name but a few. The partnership with Sainsbury’s will make a real difference to the lives of local young people. This year £800 supported a Sports Summer School for gifted and talented students from Ferndown Middle School and also assisted a gifted young gymnast from Ferndown Upper School to attend an international competition in Hamburg enabling her to take a step closer to her dream of competing at national level.

The JTYAF are very grateful to Samba Panashe for their very generous donation of £100 which was presented at the show. To find out more about this great

‘Marvellous’ Matthew the Haddington Hammer
raises an incredible £3,500 for the JTYAF with his Black Tie Charity Boxing Dinner

Matthew Quinn, a JTYAF Ambassador, organised a unique Black Tie Charity Boxing Dinner which took place at the Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club in Edinburgh on Friday 11th November. The event was a great success and not only did the JTYAF benefit with an amazing £3,500, five other charities were selected by the other entrants as being close to their hearts and Help for Heroes, The Royal Anglian Benevolent Fund, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, Yorkhill Children’s Hospice and Shooting Star Chase were all recipient charities on the night which raised a staggering £15,000!!

Pictured above: Matthew Quinn in the ring, introducing the Black Tie Charity Boxing Dinner at the Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club

During the evening guests were entertained by 4 amateur boxing bouts, all performed by 8 friends over the age of 35 who were prepared to slug it out in the ring for their chosen charity. Some of them had never set foot in a boxing ring before but they were all prepared to pull on the gloves to raise money for good causes.

‘Marvellous’ Matthew the Haddington Hammer – in the Red Corner faced Liam ‘Sledgehammer’ McGrath in the Blue Corner. Matthew was on great form and won his bout against fearsome opposition. The guts determination and sportsmanship shown by all fighters on the night was a credit to them all and Matthew should be justly proud of not only what he achieved in the ring but also for all his efforts and commitment in organising this incredibly successful event and raising a phenomenal £15,000 for some great causes.

Trustee Tony Hambleton kindly represented the JTYAF at this auspicious event and he commented:-

‘I'd heard of the “Thriller in Manilla” and the “Rumble in the Jungle” but they were nothing compared to the “Boy from Dalmahoy!”

From the moment he stepped between the ropes in his DJ to introduce the evening right up to stepping out bloodied and bruised Matt dominated the ring. He was light on his feet and fast with his hands in beating his fellow noble warrior but he had to overcome significant obstacles to ensure that the event took place at all. His determination to secure a fantastic evening had been demonstrated by having to change venues at the last minute and arrange for the ring to be driven up from Manchester on top of his training schedule! An outstanding achievement in raising so much money for worthy causes and all at the JTYAF thank him. Matt should justifiably be very proud of all that he achieved on a magnificent evening.’

Pictured left: Marvellous’ Matthew the Haddington Hammer being congratulated on behalf of the JTYAF by Trustee Tony Hambleton and pictured left: in the ring with ‘Sledgehammer’ Mcgrath. These guys mean business!

It’s a ‘Quinn Family Affair’ as Matthew’s wife Wendy has also raised over £4,000 for the JTYAF by competing in the 2011 Edinburgh Marathon. Even little Daisy Quinn has donated her pocket money and now Matthew has boxed the family total for the JTYAF to over £8,000!

A great big JTYAF thank you to the Quinn family as the funds they have raised have supported 12 youngsters on Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions, 5 youngsters on Tall Ships Voyages and provided 12 awards for music. Matthew and Wendy have made a real difference to young people’s lives, helping them to ‘Climb as high as they can dream.’

Coda Choir Raise £900 for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation with a Concert for Peace on Remembrance Day

The Coda Choir ‘Concert for Peace,’ performed on Remembrance Day at St Mary Magdalene Church in New Milton provided a most poignant repertoire of song and poetry on the most significant of days for not only the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation but for the entire nation. The church was full to capacity for this moving concert and the choir was overwhelmed by local support.

The Coda Choir, run by Jane Oakland, nominated the JTYAF as their recipient charity and the foundation was delighted to receive a cheque for £900 on Wed 23rd November following this incredibly successful fundraising event. The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation supports selected talented musicians at the Coda Fiddle Orchestra one of the Coda’s Community Projects based in Boscombe. The leader of the Fiddle Orchestra, Ceri Davies accompanied the choir when they performed The Armed Man by Carl Jenkins during the concert.

The funds raised by the choir will provide two scholarships for talented musicians in 2012, supporting them with music lessons, sheet music, instrument maintenance and examination fees, making a real difference to their musical development.

Dorset Plane Pull logo

Monday 29th August

The 3rd Dorset Plane Pull

The Dorset Plane Pull is one of the country’s most unusual yet original charity fundraising events. Teams of up to 20 individuals have to pull a Boeing 737-300, which weighs in at over 30,000Kg, a distance of 50 metres in the fastest time possible.

There were 14 teams this year and the reigning champions Castle Cover held their title for the 3rd year running with a quicker time than 2010. Although there are a now a few teams hot on their tails for 2012!

The Bournemouth Red Arrows Association Pull was a special way to end the 2011 Plane Pull in memory of Flt Lt Jon Egging and the proceeds of this attempt will be passed to the chosen charity of Jon’s wife Emma and family.

For the full results table, please visit the Plane Pull website www.planepull.co.uk/2011_Results_.html

There were a host of site activities to keep everyone entertained including a Hog Roast, BBQ, and the very popular Pimms Tent. Live entertainment was provided by local bands Lucky Pluckers and The Alibi and children and adults alike had great fun on the inflatable assault course.

Titan Airways kindly supported the event for the second year running providing the all important aircraft for the day.

Richard enlisted the support of a large number of local businesses. Please visit the Dorset Plane Pull website at www.planepull.co.uk for full details, but companies included Wyvern Cargo, Bournemouth Helicopters, Dorset Tea, the Daily Echo, European Skybus Limited and Route 24 Buses to name but a few.

The Thornton family and all the trustees at the JTYAF would like to convey their thanks and appreciation to Richard Griffin and Kyrie and Peter Feltham for organising such an outstanding event. Thank you also to all the staff and Cadets at 130 (Bournemouth) Squadron who worked tirelessly to help on the day and all the supporters and volunteers who so kindly gave up their time.

A massive thank you to the many teams that pulled that enormous Boeing 737-300 for 50 metres in order to raise funds for the JTYAF and Motor Neurone Disease. Many thanks also to the family and friends who supported them so generously. The funds raised will make an important contribution to the continued success of the JTYAF and support many local young people to achieve their ambitions in life.

If you are interested in pulling for the JTYAF next year please contact us at enquiries@jtyaf.org to register your interest.

Sunday 21st August 2011

The JTYAF Hospitality Day at the Bournemouth Air Festival 2011

The biggest aviation event of its kind in the world, the Bournemouth Air Festival took to the skies again this August 18-21st.

Located at the very centre of the flight line, the Air Festival hospitality marquee was the perfect setting for guests to enjoy a truly unforgettable day and with the sun shining, a dazzling flying programme and superb catering the JTYAF’s 3rd hospitality day was a great success.

After the tragic events less than 24 hours earlier when Red 4 crashed with the devastating loss of Flt Lt Jon Eggin everyone’s thoughts were with the Red Arrows Team and Jon Eggin's wife Emma and her family. The only fitting way to start the day was with a ‘toast to absent friends’ and before the flying began there was also a moving tribute to Jon, a two minutes silence. Only the waves could be heard lapping on the beach as literally thousands of men, women and children fell silent as a mark of respect. This touching show of support was indicative of the impact that Jon’s tragic death had had upon the town and indeed the entire country.

During the day a ‘Silent Auction’ took place in which several unique items were available and attracted many bidders. Amongst these items was a Red Arrows Flying Suit which was kindly donated by Maurice Patterson and belonged to Sqn Ldr Myles Garland. The proceeds from the Red Arrows Suit were forwarded to the Red Arrows Charitable Trust in memory of Jon Eggin.

Our thanks go to the Barlcays Girls for their enthusiasm and support and to the many individuals and businesses who generously donated raffle and auction prizes:-

Picture below right: The wonderful team of volunteers from Barclays, Di Trott, Sally Walls, Liz Marsh and Vanessa Jarvis greeted the guests and ran both the Raffle and the Silent Auction making a massive contribution to the fundraising total on the day of £9,300.

Special thanks must however go to Maurice Patterson for without his support and organisation the JTYAF hospitality day would not be possible and also to Tony Hambleton for his invaluable help with liaison and also as ‘Master of Ceremonies’ on the day.

Thank you also to Robert Brennan our photographer, the Daily Echo for supplying a copy of the Daily Echo and the Society Magazine for the guests and also to the caterers for a truly superb lunch.

Sainsbury´s Launch Day

The JTYAF is Sainsbury´s Ferndown Charity of the Year

Saturday 13th August saw the launch of the JTYAF as Sainsbury´s Ferndown´s Charity of the Year. The JTYAF received a huge amount of local support for this special day with Fire Crews from both Ferndown and Christchurch Fire Stations attending with their Fire Engines, the Award Winning Corps of Drums from 130 (Bournemouth) Squadron Air Training Corps, together with JTYAF award winners from Ferndown Upper School and the Duke of Edinburgh´s Award, Dorset.

The Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Fire Crews certainly drew attention to the event and many youngsters were thrilled to have the opportunity to sit in a real fire engine wearing a Fireman´s helmet.

Picture Left: Martin Mansbridge and the crew from Christchurch Fire Station with Anna Maycock, Laura Berrill and Mary Martin (back row left to right) who all came down to lend a hand at the Sainsbury´s launch

Picture Right: The Corps of Drums gave two superb performances and kept shoppers entertained - which was probably a totally unexpected treat, livening up their normally mundane Saturday shopping trip.

Mary Martin a JTYAF Scholar from Ferndown Upper School provided a magnificent display of her art work from a recent trip to India, which gave shoppers a feel for the sort of support the JTYAF is able to provide for local young people. Alex McPherson, Laura Berrill and Anna Maycock who have all received bursaries from the JTYAF helped tremendously giving shoppers the chance to find out more about both the JTYAF and the Duke of Edinburgh´s Award Scheme. Ashley Rogers who runs the East Dorset Duke of Edinburgh´s Award Group also gave up his time to show support for the JTYAF.

Sainsbury´s provided a raffle and although the prizes were literally a ‘mystery’, ticket sales helped to raise an incredible £810.

A massive thank you to the Ferndown and Christchurch Fire Crews, the Corps of Drums from 130 (Bournemouth) Squadron Air Training Corps, Alex, Laura, Anna and Ashley from the Duke of Edinburgh´s Award Scheme, Mary from Ferndown Upper School and Lorna Perry who supported us on the day.

Sainsbury´s have been a continuous support to the JTYAF and we are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity of another year in partnership with them. The colleagues are so enthusiastic about the foundation and the work we do and their energy and commitment was more than evident with the amount of time and effort that had gone into making the launch day such a great success. Thank you to everyone at Sainsbury´s Ferndown - here´s to another great year ahead!

Sunday 31st July

Stuart´s Double Challenge for the JTYAF

Stuart Kynaston pictured right, completed two endurance events this year in order to raise funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

His first event was the Virgin London Marathon on the 17th April 2011, which was his first ever marathon. A massive physical and mental challenge of 26.2 miles which he completed in 3hrs 39 minutes.

The ‘big’ event however, was on the 31st July, when he competed in Ironman UK in Bolton. A long distance triathlon, comprising of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle with 7,291 feet of ascent over the course and finally a 26.2 mile run. All this within 17 hours!

This was new territory for Stuart and luckily he had perfect weather and no mechanical problems with his bike. After 1hr 09 minutes in the water he tackled the gruelling cycle ride and finished the 112 miles in 6hrs 35 minute. So just a marathon to go....... he crossed the finish line in 3hrs 51 minutes giving him a total Ironman time of 11hrs 46 minutes - truly awesome!

What a massive personal achievement two huge challenges ‘in the bag’ and over £1,400 raised for a fantastic cause. Well done Stuart and thank you for your superb support.

Caribbean Fun Night

Thank you to Pat and Tony Birch who organised their 3rd event for the JTYAF and Project Fortitude, a Caribbean Fun Night which did exactly what it said on the tin. Everyone had a truly brilliant ‘fun’ night.

There was a Tropical Heatwave in Ferndown with dancing, the ‘loudest shirt competition’, limbo dancing, an auction and raffles with lots of amazing prizes. Everyone had dressed up in Caribbean style and dreadlocks were the ‘must have’ fashion item. The fabulous beat from Tropical Heatwave got everyone busting Caribbean reggae moves and the dance floor was bursting.

Pat, Tony and their team of helpers had worked extremely hard collecting a wonderful range of quality prizes for the auction and raffle and thanks to the generosity of the party goers on the night an amazing £936 was raised for the JTYAF. Pat and Tony have been a constant support since the JTYAF was set up in August 2008 and they have made a huge contribution to the Foundations success. We can´t thank them enough.

The Bournemouth Shakespeare Players - The Merry Wives of Windsor

The Merry Wives of Windsor was a magical ‘open-air’ experience. The Bournemouth Shakespeare Players produced theatre at its best with truly superb performances by the entire cast. The Priory House Gardens in Christchurch was the perfect setting for this superb comedy classic by William Shakespeare which was full of fun and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

The JTYAF was honoured to receive support from such a prestigious theatre company and were delighted to receive more than £200 from a raffle and JTYAF ticket sales. A full page article about the JTYAF in the programme was also much appreciated as this will have helped tremendously in promoting the foundation.

Karen´s Quiz Night

Karen organised a third great Quiz Night to raise money for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

Karen and John Towner are two of our top supporters as between them they have organised two previous quiz nights, Karen completed a sponsored walk in 2008 and a Skydive in July, and John ran the Virgin London Marathon 2011, all for the JTYAF. We are extremely grateful to them both for their incredible support and they certainly know how to run a great Quiz Night, as this year´s event was another brilliant success raising almost £500 and bringing their combined fundraising total to £2,500.

Karen and John, thank you for your amazing support which has made a really important contribution to the JTYAF.

2011 Jump for JT!

Team JTYAF arrived at The Airfield Camp, Netheravon, Salisbury with grey skies preventing them from achieving their goal - to throw themselves out of an aircraft at 13,000 feet!

Fortunately Lee Brown, Steph Clarke and Karen Towner were able to wait a ‘while’ and 9 hours after arrival their courage and determination paid off as the skies cleared and they were taken to be kitted out ready for their jump.

Picture: ‘Skydive for JT’ from left to right Sarah Cubitt, Lee Brown, Karen Towner, Phil Marshall, Steph Clarke and Josh Williamson.

Picture: Lee Brown absolutely loved his Skydive experience and intends to do it again!

On his second attempt Josh Williamson was lucky enough to jump virtually on arrival at Netheravon on Sunday 31st July and Phil Marshall will hopefully complete his jump on Sunday 4th September with Sarah Cubitt to follow soon.

‘Skydive for JT’ is a brilliant fundraiser for the JTYAF and John would certainly be honoured to see so many crazy individuals jumping out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft to raise money for the fantastic foundation set up in his memory. This event has so far raised an incredible £2,500 and special mention must be made to Steph Clarke for her contribution of over £1,400 to that total.

Thank you to Lee, Steph, Karen, Josh, Phil and Sarah for their amazing support and if you would like to sponsor Phil or Sarah who are still to jump, visit their JustGiving pages at:-

We will hopefully be organising another ‘Skydive for JT’ in 2012 and this event will be a Tandem Skydive with none other than The Princess of Wales´s Royal Regiment´s Parachute display team....

Team JTYAF runs the Virgin London Marathon

Annie_&_GregThe JTYAF had their first ‘team’ running the Virgin London Marathon this year.

Annie Dougall pictured right, ran the London Marathon for the JTYAF in 2010 and this year recruited a running partner Greg Piennar, pictured right.

Both Annie and Greg are very accomplished athletes having competed in events for a host of charities ranging from Marathons in London, Dublin and New York to the 3 Peaks, Hellrunners and the Ironman. A formidable duo!

John Towner pictured below right, is a member of Poole Runners and a very experienced runner. John raised funds by challenging friends and family to guess his finish time. The lucky winner of the guess his finishing time was Dave Portnell who received a bottle of champagne.

Stuart Kynaston pictured below left also completed the London Marathon on behalf of the JTYAF but his ‘big event’ will be on the 31st July, when he will compete in Ironman UK in Bolton. Everyone at the JTYAF wishes him the very best of luck.

A very big thank you to Annie, Greg, John and Stuart for choosing the JTYAF for your recipient charity. The London Marathon is a massive challenge of physical and mental endurance and John would be honoured to think that four athletes ran the Virgin London Marathon in his name.

Hi-de-Hi

Ferndown Dramas production of Hi-de-Hi was a big hit with the many Happy Campers who went along to enjoy the show. The 1980´s hit series was brought back onto stage with all the familiar characters from Joe Maplins Holiday Camp that we know and love. Trish Binding played Gladys; Cathy Williamson appeared as Peggy, Dawn Hollington as Yvonne Stuart-Hargreaves and Kevin Dicker as her husband Barry. Steve Hawker played the mild and studious holiday camp boss Jeffrey Fairbrother.

This light-hearted production was superb, excellent characterisation, great fun and a truly brilliant success. Everyone involved with the show was incredibly supportive of the foundation with over £500 raised on Wednesday 26th January which will help the JTYAF to make a real difference to local young people.
