Coda Fiddle Orchestra

The Coda Fiddle Orchestra, overseen by the Coda Music Trust, is a participatory community music project that works with children and young people offering violin tuition and ensemble opportunities - through the Fiddle Orchestra. It is run by Jack Maguire, former co-leader of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and has been running since 2004.

The celebrated Coda Fiddle Orchestra nurtures a new generation of young string players through a unique approach to teaching and regular rehearsals and performances. The youngsters aged from 6 to 16 meet every Saturday at St Clement’s Church in Boscombe and are offered a number of exciting performance opportunities which take place throughout the year. There are also a number of both individual and group coaching sessions at both St. Clement’s and Bethany Junior School.

The John Thornton Music Scholarships 2011

Pete and Linda Thornton presented the John Thornton Music Scholarships to talented young musicians of the Coda Fiddle Orchestra on Saturday 26th April.

The four young musicians have been assessed as showing above average ability and the awards will support their music education and enable them to develop their musical careers.

The John Thornton Music Scholarships 2010

The John Thornton Music Scholarships have been awarded to three young musicians who have been assessed as showing above average ability. The awards will support their music education and develop their musical careers. The awards have been made with the following objectives:-

  • To increase the music skills of selected individuals, whilst inspiring confidence and aspirations through increased 1 to 1 music support and violin tuition.
  • To provide 30 mins tuition each school week by professional musicians to enable the selected students to prepare for grade examinations suited to their level of progress.
  • To encourage and support students to reach Grade 6 or above and thus qualify for UCAS points.
  • To cover the cost of sheet music, grade examination fees and instrument maintenance.
  • To develop a consultative approach to evaluation with the selected students and to prepare them for the next steps.
