FERNDOWN UPPER SCHOOL

Scholarship awarded to Adam Clark — Ferndown Upper School
India Project 2009

In June 2009, Adam travelled as part of a group of eight young volunteers aged 15-19, alongside three youth workers, to Mysore in India to build, furnish and decorate the inside of a library for an orphanage. The orphanage is run by a charity called Odanadi, who raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking in India. The library was built primarily for young girls who have been subjected to child trafficking and are looking to rebuild their lives after having experienced sexual exploitation.

The trustees of the JTYAF were delighted to help Adam with his expenses and paid for his flights, accommodation, food, visas, equipment and also provided a laptop for the orphanage. Adam said that this trip was a life changing experience for him. To view a video of Team Odanadi 2009 just click on the link.

DORSET & WILTS WING
AIR TRAINING CORPS

Scholarship awarded to Matthew Drew,
Air Training Corps 2358 (Ferndown) Squadron

The trustees of the JTYAF were extremely pleased to award a scholarship to Matthew Drew from Ferndown. Matthew will use the scholarship for flying lessons towards his National Private Pilots License.

Matthew, a student at Poole Grammar School, said that he was always inspired by the 'tales' of John Thornton throughout his time with 2358 Ferndown Squadron and particularly enjoyed listening to John's presentation on his tour of Iraq.

Matthew's ultimate aim is to fly with the Commando Helicopter Force and has already shown that he is a very talented student. After gaining a flying scholarship with the ATC he was selected from 2358 Ferndown Sqn to attend an intensive week of flying training in Portmoak, Scotland in August 2008. He was also awarded a place on the Air Cadet Leadership Course at RAF Cranwell and found this a challenging but rewarding course that made an important contribution towards his personal development.

We wish Matthew every success — 'climb as high as you can dream'.

An award of a bursary to fund private literacy support. This Cadet aims to improve his educational achievement in order to further his ambition of becoming a pilot in the RAF.

AIR CADET JUNIOR LEADERS

The Tanzania Leadership Development Scholarship:
Awarded to Josh Williamson, Matt Ireland and Matt Smith

The aim of this scholarship was to provide an experience which would develop a sense of leadership, responsibility, dignity and courtesy towards other individuals, organisations and cultures.

The three Junior Leaders travelled to Arusha in Tanzania. They were involved in helping to build a school at Shiboro Village and raised money to provide the materials for windows in the classroom. They taught English to the primary school children there, spent time living in a boma in the Maasai village of Olmolog and took on the challenge of climbing Mount Meru.

The Junior Leaders had a very successful expedition due to the contacts that they had established before and during the trip, but mainly due to the fact that they were able to plan, budget and make decisions as a team. They all felt that this was due to the previous training they had each received throughout their ATC and Junior Leaders careers.

Josh Williamson commented, ‘the trip itself was more than just spending two months travelling around doing various different activities, it was a life changing experience where we were doing things that no tourist would normally do, and it’s these memories that will stay with us forever.
